Session Outline

In this session we will discuss…

  1. How network data is generated: three types of relationship data are used to represent organizations as networks—instrumental, affective, and online
  2. How network data is analyzed: two types of measures are used to describe organizational networks—measures of cohesion (for the organization/group as a whole) and measures of position (for each individual within the organization/group)
  3. How network data is applied: two types of outcomes can be predicted or explained by network data—individual-level, e.g. salary and time-to-promotion and group/unit level, e.g. turnover and productivity

Key Takeaways

  • Connectedness = success, i.e. the better connected individuals, teams, and units are, the better their performance tends to be
  • To achieve the benefits of better connectedness, leadership need to see the organization as a network of relationships
  • This is only achieved if people analytics staff knows how to correctly generate, analyze, and apply network data.
